Discovering Regulatory Solutions: Lessons from a Tripping Car Charger

I wanted to share a little anecdote from my recent move to our new house, which turned out to be quite an enlightening experience, filled with valuable lessons and insights.

In our new home, we were fortunate to have a car charger already installed. Naturally, I was eager to start using it to charge my car. However, I soon encountered an issue where the charger would trip and switch off after just a few minutes of charging. It was frustrating, to say the least, as it seemed like an unnecessary hassle that was both time-consuming and critical. I began contemplating the idea of getting a new charger installed, thinking it might be the only solution.

It was during this puzzling situation that the previous homeowner shared some wisdom with me. They mentioned that there had been issues with the power supply from the grid station, which occasionally resulted in the charger tripping. This gave me a glimmer of hope that perhaps the charger wasn’t the problem itself.

I decided to consult with my wife about the issue, and she had an ingenious suggestion. She opened my car charging app and pointed out that I was charging the car at 16A. She recommended that I try starting at a lower amperage, say 8A, and then gradually increase it if needed. I must admit, I had never paid much attention to the charging amperage before, as in our previous house, and with our previous charger, this issue had never arisen.

Following her advice, I started charging at 8A. Yes, it took a bit longer to charge the car, but the beauty of it was that I could simply plug it in overnight and have it fully charged by morning. The difference between a 6-hour charge and a 9-hour charge, in terms of my daily routine, was negligible.

This experience taught me a valuable lesson. It reminded me that the first solution that comes to mind may not always be the most suitable one. Sometimes, a fresh perspective or a second opinion can lead to a much better solution. It’s a classic case of “two heads are better than one.” So, even when you think you’ve found the answer to your regulatory problem, it’s often beneficial to consult with a colleague or someone you trust. They might just offer an alternative that you hadn’t considered.
